 Early Intervention

Beginning reading and writing skills are necessary for lifelong success. Proficient readers open doors to opportunities that last a lifetime. Developing early reading skills is important and a goal at Runyon. We view all students as learners and capable of continuously achieving. The Early Intervention Reading program supplements reading and writing instruction for identified students in kindergarten through third grade. In August, numerous reading assessments are administered to individual students by the literacy team. Students found reading below grade level are identified and small groups are created. Lessons are developed to meet the individual's literacy needs. Lessons may include phonemic awareness, word attack strategies, comprehension skills, vocabulary development and writing skills. Parents are notified if their child qualifies for additional literacy support and permission slips are sent home before groups begin in September.

 News & Notes

The Early Intervention program is currently in progress! Literacy Specialist Cindy Graybeal works with individual students and small groups in first, second and third grades. This program provides additional reading and writing instruction for students in need of supplemental support. Sight words, decoding strategies, fluency, and comprehension skills are reinforced in our small groups. It was a pleasure to meet our students’ parents during parent-teacher conferences. Parental support is critical for your child’s success. If you would like to come visit our small groups, please call and arrange a time.
